San Francisco, April 1, 2015 – Maritime Wine Trading Collective has been appointed the sole North American importer of Mendoza’s Bodega Benegas Wines. The Benegas family has profound and historic ties to the South American wine industry. In the mid-1800s, Don Tiburcio Benegas planted his 100 acre Libertad vineyard with pre-phylloxera, un-grafted vines from France. These Libertad vineyard cabernet franc vines are recognized as the oldest vines in South America and amongst the oldest in the world. They yield fruit which is bottled as the “Benegas-Lynch” single vineyard tier of wines, named for  the Benegas’ family’s ties to Bordeaux’s Lynch family dating back to the 1800’s. Benegas Lynch wines have received consistent 90+ scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

Don Tiburcio Benegas is regarded as the father of viticulture in Argentina, as Agoston Haraszthy is in California. Don Tiburcio’s winery, El Trapiche, was the largest producer in Argentina for years—topping seven million liters per year—until it collapsed in the early 1990s at which time all assets were sold off. In 1995, Federico Benegas seized the opportunity to buy the Libertad vineyard and thus reclaim his family’s heritage.

“I was introduced to Benegas wines a year ago,” explains Maritime CEO, Chris Nickolopoulos. ”I was intrigued by the story of Benegas and thought Federico’s wines were wonderful.  My partner, Elijah, and I went to Argentina to see this historic vineyard firsthand. We loved what we what saw, learned and tasted. The Libertad vineyard, with its low yield and uniquely high-intensity fruit, is an amazing treasure, resulting in wines profoundly authentic amongst all South American wines.”

Chris continues: “Benegas wines tell a unique story of family heritage and stewardship. As is our mission with all of our Maritime portfolio partners, we are committed to sharing this story and representing these wines to an audience that appreciates and savors them.”

With increased production and esteem, Bodega Benegas sought to engage a national North American importer to help manage their wines abroad. “I was very impressed by the depth of Chris’s understanding of the marketplace and Maritime’s close relationships with their 70+ wine-centric distributors,” states owner and winemaker, Federico Benegas Lynch. “My view on a strategic approach to market and the opportunity for our wines in the USA is consistent with Chris’. I have every confidence that our aspiration in building a solid distribution base in the USA both qualitatively and quantitatively will be achieved”.
