San Francisco — Monday, October 5, 2015 — The San Francisco Brewers Guild (SFBG) announced today its annual collaboration beer, traditionally rolled out as part of SF Beer Week (SFBW), will involve two brews for 2016 as part of a playful competition pitting San Francisco craft brewers from north and south of Market Street, a well-known dividing line that cuts through the heart of the city.

Each team of San Francisco brewers shall create a standout collaboration beer to be released at the official SFBW Opening Gala at Pier 35 (1454 Embarcadero, San Francisco) on Friday, January 22, 2016.

In alignment with SF Beer Week 2016‘s football theme, itself coinciding with Super Bowl 50 (Feb. 7, 2016, at Levi’s Stadium), this Opening Gala Beer Bowl offers an entertaining People’s Choice-style contest where Bay Area craft beer fans can share comments about their favorite SF Beer Week 2016 collaboration beer. Specific voting details will be announced in the coming weeks.

All 26 SFBG members will be engaging in this friendly face-off as participants in these two teams:

THE STRATEGY

Leading up to SF Beer Week 2016, Team NOMA and Team SOMA will have an opportunity to determine their “game plan” in the form of a pre-selected beer style that allows for use of three “free agent” base ingredients, being provided by Brewers Supply Group in the form of high-quality malt, yeast and hops.

Once a beer style and base ingredients have been chosen, each team will be allowed to select up to four specialty ingredients being donated by Whole Foods Market as part of a mock draft. These ingredients may include specialty grains (e.g., rice, corn, oats, spelt, sorghum, etc.), sugars (e.g., local honey, agave, etc.), spices, herbs, and/or fruit.

An official coin toss will be held on October 24, 2015, to kick off the SF Brewers Guild’s other marquee event, Brews on the Bay, and determine which team gets first pick of a specialty ingredient — thereby making that ingredient unavailable to the other team.

DRAFT DAY

The ingredient selection process will be part of a “draft day” held in November 2015 (day and time TBA). Like a real draft, each team must be ready to revise its ingredient choices in real time, based on what remains “on the board,” as the selection process removes ingredients from availability.

Following this Collaboration Beer Draft Day, Team NOMA and Team SOMA will brew their beers. The final two products will be tapped at the SFBW Opening Gala, when attendees will enjoy the first opportunity to sample and compare each beer. Both beers will then be made available at partner venues throughout SF Beer Week 2016.

Updates, play by play and news from the field will be forthcoming as this collaboration beer season unfolds. Stay tuned as the SF Brewers Guild and its members get ready to score big with a solid mix of gamesmanship and its most creative collaborations yet.

About the San Francisco Brewers Guild
The San Francisco Brewers Guild formed in 2004 as a non-profit 501(c)(6) during a renaissance in American craft brewing. Our mission is to restore and preserve San Francisco’s brewing heritage and unite those who make local beer with those who love it. The Guild achieves this by educating the public about craft beer, organizing and hosting events such as SF Beer Week, Brews on the Bay and Meet the Brewers, advocating for the craft beer industry in city government, donating services and product to local charities, and partnering with artisan producers in the food, beverage, hospitality and agricultural industries.
