Like most great enterprises with humble beginnings, Brad Warner never expected his small, part-time endeavor to blossom into a thriving business, but that’s exactly the route Rutherford Equipment Rental has taken since Warner first recognized an industry need back in 1991 and decided to do something about it.

Back then, Warner was working full time at Robert Mondavi Winery and the practice of sharing equipment that was common in the early days of the industry was becoming a thing of the past.

Warner began to accumulate equipment, renting it out to other winemakers that he knew. In 2008, when he got reacquainted with a former co-worker who became his wife and business partner, the company started to expand and today serves the entire North Bay commercial wine industry.

Rutherford Equipment Rental team members have more than 20 years of extensive, hands-on, wine production experience. Customers can rely on working with a vendor who understands their challenges and maintains a wide selection of the rental equipment unique to winemaking.

Rutherford Equipment Rental lists the entire range of their equipment and prices on their website. According to Lisa Warner, “We want to provide easy access for our customers. We know that production planning doesn’t always take place between 8am and 4pm, Monday through Friday.”

With tanks ranging in size from 180 gallons up to 3,000 gallons, large format vacuum corkers, fillers, spinners, filter housings and pumps, Rutherford Equipment Rental’s niche is wine production equipment. In response to customer feedback, pallet wrappers, glycol chillers/heaters and flow meters were added to the growing list of Rutherford Equipment Rental’s inventory list this year.

“We are always open to suggestions on adding new items,” affirms Brad Warner. “As a winemaker myself, I always have a wish list of equipment. However, I may only need to use it once, conduct an experiment or don’t have the space to store it. Renting is an excellent option.”

For wineries that want to conserve their cash for grapes and bottling, it pencils out. Warner notes that, “a 550 gallon jacketed tank with a bottom gate costs $7,000 new. Renting the same tank from us is $370 a month might make more sense. Furthermore, we pro-rate by the day after two weeks, which comes to $12.30 a day. For start-ups, custom crush, corporations and businesses of all sizes, rental under these circumstances is ideal.”

In addition, the company is the sole distributor of Airocide, a state of the art air purification system developed by NASA and approved by the FDA. More than 90 wineries throughout the country have implemented the technology with great success.

Rutherford Equipment Rental is located in south Napa and offers service to Sonoma, Napa, Lake and Mendocino Counties as well as the East Bay, South Bay and San Francisco regions.

“We’re excited about continuing our growth and meeting new customers,” says Lisa Warner. “Brad and I agree – we have a terrific team and are proud of being a resource our colleagues count on for outstanding equipment and service.”
