SANTA ROSA, Calif. (December 18, 2017) – Benovia Winery, a small production, family-owned winery in the heart of the Russian River Valley, is pleased to announce the release of two expertly crafted single vineyard Pinot Noirs from the winery’s estate vineyards, Tilton Hill and Martaella, and is thrilled to introduce a sparkling Blanc de Blancs. Benovia Winery is owned by husband-and-wife co-founders Mary Dewane and Joe Anderson and winemaker Mike Sullivan.

“Our single vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs are popular with savvy, adventurous wine enthusiasts,” said Sullivan.  “We have our devoted club members, the Benovians, to thank for the launch of our first sparkling wine. They have been asking us for a bubbly they can serve for festive celebrations.”

2012 Blanc de Blancs Russian River Valley Sparkling Wine
Sullivan describes the 2012 vintage as amazing in both quantity and quality. Warm and dry weather conditions at fruit set allowed for complete pollination resulting in large clusters with many more berries per cluster than normal. Sullivan and his team experienced a mild summer with very few heat spikes and near-perfect weather at harvest.

Benovia’s first-ever sparkling wine is made from meticulously grown Chardonnay from the family’s Martaella estate vineyard, which is named after the co-founders’ mothers, Martha and Eleanor. The heirloom Chardonnay clones planted at Martaella retain bright acidity and express beautiful floral and mineral notes.

Benovia’s 2012 Blanc de Blancs Russian River Valley Sparkling Wine has aromas of candied orange, pineapple and ginger that waft from the glass and are complemented by the fragrance of warm hazelnut and cream.  With generous flavors of Mandarin orange and ripe apricot, the palate is rich and full on entry with a savory and lingering finish.  The Blanc de Blancs can be purchased for $50 per bottle and just 240 cases were produced.

2015 Tilton Hill Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
According to Sullivan, unusual weather early in 2015 reduced Benovia’s yield by as much as 50 percent in some of the family’s estate vineyards, making the 2015 vintage highly sought after by collectors.

Perched on a ridge near the town of Freestone, sustainably-farmed Tilton Hill is Benovia’s coldest vineyard and lies just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean.  The temperature rarely rises above 80 degrees, allowing the precious grapes to ripen slowly, striking a gentle balance between vibrant acids and ripe flavor.

Deep violet in color, this alluring and hedonistic wine has amazing extract and purity of fruit focus.  Vibrant fruit aromas of ripe black cherry and raspberry soufflé harmonize with East-Indian spice notes and notes of forest floor while heady aromas lead into equally vibrant flavors of blackberry, Queen Anne cherry and white pepper.  On the palate the juicy red fruits complement the velvet-like texture and spicy finish.  Benovia’s 2015 Tilton Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir is $60 per bottle and only 300 cases were produced.

2015 Martaella Vineyard Pinot Noir

Martaella, Benovia’s largest estate vineyard surrounds the family’s winery and tasting room. It is sustainably-farmed and was densely planted with Pinot Noir vines – more than twice the standard number of vines per acre.  The European-style spacing helps achieve smaller yields from each vine, creating more intense fruit.

The 2015 Martaella Vineyard Pinot Noir is deep ruby in color with vibrant raspberry, Bing cherry and sarsaparilla aromas leaping from the glass.  On the palate, the wine’s juicy mouthfeel is supported by cherry and blackberry flavors, building through the mid-palate and finishing with fine grain tannins.  An intriguing blend of power and restraint, this Pinot Noir is both savory and delicately sweet.  Benovia’s 2015 Martaella Vineyard Pinot Noir is $60 per bottle and just 407 cases were produced.

Benovia Winery has also recently released the following wines:

  • 2015 La Pommeraie Chardonnay – $48 per bottle, 305 cases
  • 2015 La Pommeraie Pinot Noir – $60 per bottle, 300 cases
  • 2015 Sonoma County Zinfandel – $40 per bottle, 350 cases
