Costa Mesa, CA (December 19, 2016)– The American Wine Society, the oldest and largest organization of wine consumers, awarded Charles Krug Winery patriarch Peter Mondavi Sr, its Award of Merit at the organization’s national conference.

Since 1971 the AWS Award of Merit has been given to wine industry luminaries in recognition to substantial and meritorious contribution in viticulture, enology, education or journalism.

The decision to recognize Peter Mondavi Sr. was made in late 2015, prior to his death February 20, 2016, at age 101.

“In addition to the influence his work has had in Napa Valley and beyond, Peter Mondavi Sr. and his family have been supporters of this organization from nearly its very beginning,” said AWS Executive Director John Hames. “AWS members have a deep affection the family and Charles Krug brand.”

Accepting the award posthumously on behalf of his father was Peter Mondavi, Jr.

“Dad would have been both thrilled and humbled by the AWS’s recognition of his lifelong accomplishments through this Award of Merit,” Mr. Mondavi said. “Over six decades, Dad worked in a very quiet, methodical and, above all else, passionate way to achieve what he did.”

A pioneer of now widely-embraced techniques such as cold fermentation of whites and rosés and aging wines in French oak barrels, Peter Mondavi Sr. steered C. Mondavi & Family and Charles Krug Winery which it obtained in 1943, through half a century of change. More recently he guided Krug through a replanting of 400 acres of vineyards, adoption of a sustainable farming practices, and investment in state-of-the-art winemaking.

Past AWS Award of Merit winners include Andre Tchelistcheff, Louis P. Martini, Warren Winiarski, Vincent Petrucci, Mike Grgich, Kent Rosenblum, Zelma Long, and Gina Gallo.

The AWS is the oldest and largest organization of wine consumers in United States, a non-profit with the mission of promoting wine appreciation through education.
