Seminar focuses on wine research supported by Washington state wine industry.

SEATTLE (May, 11, 2017) – Registration is open for WAVEx, a condensed version of the popular Washington Advancements in Viticulture and Enology (WAVE) research-focused seminar. The research short-course, co-sponsored by the Washington State Wine Commission and Washington State University, is designed to give winemakers practical application of wine research that has been supported by the Washington wine industry. WAVEx is scheduled for July 11, 2017 at Walla Walla Community College and July 13, 2017 at the Brightwater Center in Woodinville.

WAVEx will dive deep into the subject of “Managing Phenolics from Grape to Barrel.” Tannin management is inherent in most wine regions of Washington due to the state’s abundance of sunshine, warm temperatures and ability to mature and ripen fruit. Tannin management has been well studied by WSU scientists who have followed phenolics from vine to wine. Dr. Markus Keller, WSU viticulturist, will discuss research findings and strategies of phenolic management in the vineyard; Dr. Jim Harbertson, WSU research enologist, will discuss how to influence phenolics at the winery; and Dr. Tom Collins, WSU wine chemist, will share findings in managing phenolics in the barrel and during aging of wine.

WAVEx will start at 10 a.m. and conclude at 2 p.m. Lunch is included in the $15 registration fee. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is necessary.

The purpose of WAVEx is to raise awareness about the value of research funded by the wine industry through the grape and wine assessments paid to the Washington State Wine Commission. According to feedback from those who attended WAVE 2017, the event helps growers and winemakers access research information and apply research in their operations.

Register for WAVEx on the Wine Commission’s WAVE website.
