  • Gastronomy schools and universities are called to this tapas and Rioja wine pairing competition.
  • The winner will receive a gastronomic holiday in Spain and an intensive course at the Basque Culinary Center.

It’s hard to think about a couple that pairs better that a glass of wine and a tapa in the field of gastronomy. “The history of the tapa is intrinsically associated to that of our country and is, in addition, the most exportable gastronomic concept we have”, in the words of Ferran Adriá.

Within this context, the D.O.Ca Rioja in collaboration with the Basque Culinary Center is launching the second edition of ‘Rioja Wine & Tapas’, an international competition to pair tapas with Rioja wines aimed at gastronomy school university students and which seeks to award recipes that reflect the multicultural reality of gastronomy. Participants must be over 18 and must be enrolled in a gastronomy course in a school or university.

The competition started on 15 June 2017 and the deadline to submit proposals will end on 28 October. Participants must complete the form of the competition’s website (http://riojawine.com/tapascompetition/en/) to submit their gastronomic proposal and they will be asked for a written recipe, the image of the recipe they have prepared, the Rioja wine they have chosen to pair with their tapa and a brief explanation of why they have chosen that wine. Each participant may choose the type and the brand of wine they want to do their pairing, provided it is a D.O.Ca Rioja wine.

The winner will enjoy a gastronomic holiday in Spain, where they will visit one of the main wine producing regions at a global level, D.O.Ca.Rioja, and will visit San Sebastian, one of the cities with the highest number of Michelin stars, where they will eat at a renowned restaurant and can enjoy a tapas tour accompanied by an expert. Likewise, the Basque Culinary Center, the country’s first Faculty of Gastronomy, will offer the winner an intensive professional course.
