January 17th 2018 – Texas wines continue to rise in quality as measured by national and international awards. The latest evidence of this is a Double Gold Medal awarded to Valley Mills Vineyards by the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. The wine in question from is their 2014 Estate Tempranillo.

Tempranillo is among the varietals that are producing noteworthy wines here in the Lone Star State. Texas winemakers say that the grape, native to Spain, is ideally suited to our warm, continental climate.  “I love working with Tempranillo”, says Marc Moberg, winemaker at Valley Mills Vineyards, “the potential for consistent quality from this grape is hard to beat”.

The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition is the largest judgement of American wines in the country. Each submitted wine is reviewed by a panel of judges from various areas of the industry including media; restaurant, food and hospitality industry wine buyers; retail wine buyers; the world of wine education, and the winemaking industry.

Wines are judged blind, meaning that none of the judges know the origin or brand of what they are tasting. Winning a Double Gold Medal is only possible when every judge (usually 10) on a panel unanimously designates a wine as a gold medal winner. This latest award continues the trend of Texas wines gaining recognition beyond the borders of our state.

Valley Mills Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery. The award winning 2014 Estate  Tempranillo ($60) among other wines made from 100% Texas-grown grapes, can be found at their tasting room just west of Waco, TX. More at www.valleymillsvineyards.com
