The Montefalco Consortium will be promoting the native wines of Umbria, Italy, in 2018 with seminars and activities for press, trade, and consumers

February 20, 2018 (New York, NY) – Sagrantino di Montefalco, the famous, dry red wine hailing from Umbria, Italy, returns to the minds and palates of consumers in the United States under the helm of the Montefalco Consortium with a series of promotions and exclusive events for press, trade, and consumers in 2018.

The Montefalco Consortium represents all native wines produced in and around the historical town of Montefalco in Umbria, popularly known as the “green heart of Italy” for its landlocked position and verdant landscape. The wines range from the flagship Sagrantino di Montefalco, made from 100% Sagrantino grapes and known for its bold flavors and tannic structure, to unique offerings such as Rosso di Montefalco, white Trebbiano Spoletino and Montefalco Grechetto, and sweet Passito, all of which are fairly new to the American palate.

The six Sagrantino producer members of the Consortium who will be featured for the duration of the promotion in the US are Antonelli, Arnaldo Caprai, Briziarelli, Perticaia, Scacciadiavoli, and Tenuta Alzatura Cecchi. Among the Consortium’s activities will be the Steak & Sagrantino initiative, which will be open to the public in April and May. The event will take place in the best steakhouses and restaurants in major US cities, including NYC, Chicago, and Dallas. The offering will be a glass of Sagrantino from one of six of the Consortium’s winery members paired with what is arguably Sagrantino’s best and most ideal food match: steak.

“We are very pleased to be actively present in the United States again, as it is one of the most important wine markets for us,” says Amilcare Pambuffetti, President of the Montefalco Consortium. “We have seen significant growth in the awareness, recognition, and appreciation of Sagrantino in the past few years from American consumers, and regard this interest as great potential for our activities in 2018.”

In May, there will also be a seminar dedicated to this niche wine for press and trade, guided by a renowned industry professional and Italian wine expert and enthusiast in NYC. In addition, Alessandro Masnaghetti, cartographer of Italy’s wine regions in his “Enogea” wine maps, will be an honored guest. Finally, special Winemaker Dinners will be held at selected restaurants, with Montefalco producers making an appearance at the Steak & Sagrantino dinners.

The promotion comes one year after Masnaghetti included the territory’s vineyards in his comprehensive Enogea collection, and it also follows the 2018 edition of the “Anteprima Sagrantino,” the preview of the latest vintage
