(Napa, CA) – Atlas Wine Co launches single serving (187mL) sparkling wine, Oro Bello Blanc De Blancs, after two years of research into the perfect can configuration.

Wine in a can is going through an intense growth phase at the moment. In a recent Neilsen omnibus study, canned wine growth significantly outpaced all other wine packaging options. Its overall dollar percentage increase in 2017 was an extraordinary 59.5% vs. just 3.3% in the traditional 750mL bottle format. Is this just a passing trend? Or will we continue to see growth in this segment for years to come? Atlas Wine Co believes the secret to success in this market can be explicitly found in a single serving (187mL) sparkling wine and gives six reasons why this is true:

NOT ALL CAN SIZES CAN BE SOLD AS SINGLES

Of the many sizes of wine cans available (187mL, 250mL, 375mL and 500mL) only three are legal to sell as singles, the 187mL, 350mL, and 500mL. The often used 250mL must be sold in 4-packs and have a disclaimer “must not be sold in singles” printed on them.

SMALLER SINGLE SIZE = SMALLER PRICE

Consumers often purchase the same wine over and over again because they don’t want to risk spending a lot of money on something they haven’t tried before. The 187mL size is precisely ¼ the size of a traditional bottle and therefore can be offered at a quarter of the price. In the case of Altas Wine Co.’s Oro Bello Blanc de Blancs, this puts each can at a retail price of $4.50. At this price point, it is easy to try something new with minimal risk.

SMALLER SIZE GIVES GREATER ACCESS TO NON-TRADITIONAL WINE LOCALES

The single serving size (187mL) can is the perfect format for locations where wine has been traditionally more challenging to serve such as concerts venues, sports venues, clubhouses, pools, breweries, take-away food halls, and kiosks. There is no need to worry about broken glass, over pouring, or corked wine. It also eliminates the problem of open bottle spoilage and empty bottle storage.

THE SINGLE SERVING SIZE IS ALWAYS AT THE PERFECT SERVING TEMPERATURE

Aluminum is incredibly efficient at conducting both heat and cold; this can create a problem for can sizes larger than a single serving (187mL) as the wine heats up very quickly both in your hand and in the ambient temperature. Wine drinkers are hard pressed to consume the larger volumes rapidly enough before it warms up in the can. A single 187mL serving is therefore ideal because not only do you not have to worry about heat transfer (it will be entirely consumed before that happens), but the superconductivity and small size of the can will mean a faster than average cooling time. 187mL cans can thoroughly chill in the fridge within 15 minutes.

BUBBLES AREN’T JUST FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS

Single serving sparkling cans give unprecedented flexibility for consumers that wish to drink bubbles but are hesitant to open a full bottle if they aren’t sure that they can finish it. This often occurs in scenarios where other people in a group wish to consume different types of beverages, or the consumer only wanted one glass before moving on to another varietal. Unlike still wine, sparkling wine is much more difficult to keep once it has been opened, as the carbonation starts to dissipate immediately. The smaller size ensures that every glass you drink is as sparkly and fresh as if you just opened it…because you did!

CONSUMERS ASSOCIATE CANS WITH CARBONATION

When you open a can of beer or soda you expect to hear the “pop” and “hsss” of carbonation releasing and look forward to the bright taste of the bubbles. Opening a can without bubbles just feels flat. Cans are the perfect medium for sparkling wines. Atlas Wine Co. took full advantage of the single serving can size by maximizing the amount of carbonation possible. In fact, Oro Bello Blanc de Blancs cans have a carbonation level equal to the 3.5 bars of pressure of a prosecco. Many canned wines claim to be sparkling (or fizzy) however very few meet the sparkling specifications.
