As in Life, so Goes Wine: “It is not About the Sprint but the Marathon”

Ultra Marathoner Dean Karnazes Joins NU-Greek Team as Partner and Advocate

Sonoma, CA (May 18, 2018) – The winemaking team from NU-Greek Wines is thrilled to announce the release of their new label, Marathon. Marathon’s first two varietals are called “Athena’s Vineyard” and “Nike’s Vineyard” which will be released on May 25th, 2018 in honor of National Wine Day. The team from NU-Greek Wines, which is also the parent company to Georgos Wines, will continue to release flavorful, active lifestyle orientated wines under the Marathon label.

These wines are the direct result of a new partnership between NU-Greek Wines and Greek-American ultramarathoner, Dean Karnazes: https://bit.ly/J2m5tU. The bestselling author of, Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner, and one of Time Magazine’s “Top 100 Most Influential People in the World,” Karnazes is committed to the NU-Greek technique of handcrafting a Greek wine. He states, “I am honored to be part of the team bringing you Marathon Super-Premium Greek Wines. As a proud Greek and a marathon runner, these wines speak to me. They are lively and filled with vigor, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy them as much as I do.”

Among his many accomplishments, in 2006, Karnazes ran 50 marathons, in all 50 US states, in 50 consecutive days. “Running can be painful,” Karnazes often says, and as part of his recovery process he follows the same practice of Greek athletes by enjoying wine for rest and relaxation after exercise. The ancient Greek philosopher and physician Hippocrates once noted, “Wine is an appropriate article for mankind, both for the healthy body and for the ailing man.” Karnazes enjoys wine after a long run; for him wine works much better than ibuprofen. “Wine loosens the muscles and invigorates the spirit,” Karnazes says, “but the quality of the wine is very important. Marathon wines are crafted with lower sulfites and contain no additives. These things matter, especially to an athlete.” Photos from the collaboration can be found here: https://bit.ly/2Kd2qH8

The sustainable grapes used in Marathon come from the hillsides of Greece, where the sun and soil produce a superb quality grape. Handcrafted and bottled in Sonoma by master vintner, Robert Rex, the results are an exceptional caliber wine that both active individuals and wine enthusiasts will prize. Rex, who has been making wine since 1972, received the award for 2018 Winemaker of the Year from the American Fine Wine Competition (AFWC). The award is a welcome addition to over three hundred others acquired in his career – all a testament to the craftsmanship in Marathon Wines. Rex says, “Clean wine, clear head, is the motto at Deerfield. We bring this quality and commitment to Marathon Wines by vinting and bottling them at Deerfield. Marathon wines are very low in sulfites and produce no allergic reactions. Wine should be simply delicious and good for you. The passion that Dean has for running marathons we mirrored in Marathon Wines.”

“Athena’s Vineyard” is bright and refreshing, almost effervescent on the tongue. It is composed 100% from Greece’s most prized Assyrtiko (ah-SEER-tee-koe) grapes, and is exceptionally clean and will refresh your palate and your spirit – even after a long run. This Super-Premium Greek wine, inspired by Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, is a 2017 vintage similar to a dry Sauvignon blanc, and follows the high standards of all NU-Greek Wines.

The other Marathon varietal, “Nike’s Vineyard” gets its name from Nike, the Goddess of Victory, and is also a 2017 vintage. It is a delicious and delicate dry rosé blend made entirely from indigenous, sustainably grown premium Greek grapes. “Nike’s Vineyard” is perfectly balanced, dry, refreshing and lively on the palate. “It has a much bounce as Dean’s racing strides,” Winemaker Robert Rex says, “His athleticism inspired this exquisite rosé.”

Both wines will follow the mission of NU-Greek Wines to create the healthiest and most flavorful wine possible. In order to accomplish this, the grapes themselves are 100% non GMO, hand-picked and triple hand sorted in Greece. The wine is then transported in sealed containers to the Sonoma valley to be perfected and bottled on the premises of Deerfield Ranch Winery. This meticulous but worthwhile process ultimately results in a cleaner tasting wine with low sulfites and no additives – making Marathon Wines healthier and  with high quality flavors that athletes and wine lovers can appreciate.

Marathon will fit in well with NU-Greek Wine’s exquisite varietals from the Georgós label,  which are also made with original Greek winemaking techniques. Both NU Greek Wine labels, Marathon and Georgós, are the direct result of a team pursuing excellence in flavor and healthfulness, and they look forward to continuing to bring their Super-Premium Greek wines to the American palate.
