Intimate Distance Opens with Artist Reception June 22

RUTHERFORD, CALIFORNIA (June 14, 2018) – Mumm Napa winery’s Fine Art Photography Gallery introduces a new exhibit on June 22 with the opening of Intimate Distance, featuring the work of photographer Todd Hido. This mid-career survey invites viewers to dwell on images and ideas that have followed the internationally acclaimed artist for the past 25 years.

An opening reception and book signing, open to the public, will take place on Friday, June 22, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Fine Art Photography Gallery. Tickets are $25 per person ($20 for Wine Club members).

Intimate Distance features more than 30 photographs exploring Hido’s deep interest in the darker aspects of American suburban life. Filtered through the lens of biography and memories of his childhood home of Kent, Ohio, Hido’s work is an unsettling probe into the collective consciousness. “People ask me how I find my pictures. I tell them I drive around. I drive and drive, and I mostly don’t find anything that is interesting to me. But then, something calls out—something that looks sort of off or maybe an empty space. Sometimes it’s a sad scene. I like that kind of stuff. So I take the photos, and some are good. And so I keep driving and looking and taking pictures.”

Hido’s work has been published in several monographs, including Aperture’s 2015 chronological survey Intimate Distance. His photographs have been featured in Artforum, Vanity Fair, the New York Times Magazine and Wired, and they are in the permanent collections of the Getty Center, Los Angeles; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art; as well as in many other public and private collections. All photography in the exhibit is represented by Casemore Kirkeby.

To purchase tickets and attend the opening artist reception, please RSVP by calling (800) 686-6272, Monday – Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The exhibit will run through January 2019. In addition, the Mumm Napa Fine Art Photography Gallery features the ongoing Ansel Adams exhibit Poetry of Light, which includes 27 gelatin silver prints from the famed photographer. The Fine Art Photography Gallery is open to Mumm Napa visitors at no charge.
