Niagara region wineries dominant among WineAlign’s selections at the 2018 National Wine Awards of Canada, earning three of the four top spots in Canada

Niagara region wineries took center stage among WineAlign’s selections at the 2018 National Wine Awards of Canada, earning three of the four top spots in this year’s competition—the largest and most comprehensive in Canadian history, with 1,850 wines from 257 wineries entered.

Tawse Winery, situated on the lower slopes of the Niagara Escarpment, was named one of the Top 4 wineries in Canada. A family-owned organic and biodynamic winery, Tawse is no stranger to accolades, having been voted Canada’s Winery of the Year in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016. Tawse wines, produced by uniting traditional winemaking techniques with state-of-the-art technology, are known for their elegance, depth and character. The winery, bearing its founder’s name, first opened in 2005, just five years after Moray Tawse purchased his first six acres of vineyard.

Beamsville’s Redstone Winery, another project of Moray Tawse’s award-winning winemaking team, and Two Sisters Vineyards, located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, also placed in the Top 4.

Named for its intensely red clay soil and large stones, Redstone’s picturesque, 38-acre vineyard is perfect for maturing late-ripening varietals including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

Two Sisters Vineyards, the vision of Ontario’s Marotta family, opened its doors in 2014 and has been producing wines authentic to Niagara-on-the-Lake ever since. In addition to its impressive rank among Canada’s best wineries, Two Sisters earned WineAlign’s #1 Best Performing Small Winery in Canada.

“The 100-plus wineries that call the Niagara region home play a special role in shaping special experiences for the countless visitors we welcome each year,” said Anthony Annunziata, president of the Tourism Partnership of Niagara. “Anyone who has enjoyed a glass of wine at one of Moray Tawse’s estates or marveled at the views from Two Sisters’ patio can speak to what makes Niagara Wine Country such a unique and memorable destination.”

The Niagara peninsula is home to more than 100 wineries and welcomes visitors from around the world. To learn more about all the region has to offer, please visit www.visitniagaracanada.com.
