Wark Communications Releases Findings of 2018 American Wine Writer Survey

(Napa, CA)—Women are the future of American wine writing, according to a new survey by Wark Communications. The 2018 American Wine Writer Survey, the fourth such survey conducted by Wark Communications since 1994, shows that while the number of U.S. wine writers today are nearly evenly split between men and women, younger wine writers skew female in a significant way.

The 2018 American Wine Writer Survey results are available online at https://www.warkcommunications.com/wine-writer-survey.

Since the first American Wine Writer Survey was published in 1994, the number of women in the field has nearly doubled from 24% to 45% in 2018. Moreover, 60% of today’s wine writers 50 years or younger are women and the survey results show that the younger the writer, the more likely they are women.

Other findings revealed in the Survey include:

  • Blog writing is commonplace
  • Wine writers tend to skew older
  • Writers holding some sort of wine certification is becoming more common
  • Writers continue to use the 100 Point system at the same rate they did 25 years ago
  • Social media tools are critical to the writers’ work
  • Writers are concerned about pay and shrinking viable publishing outlets
  • The impact of climate change weighs on wine writers’ minds

“While wine lovers have access to more information and content than ever before, professional wine writers are finding it more difficult than ever to make a good living chronicling the world of wine,” said Tom Wark, author of the Survey. “Both pay, as well as viable publishing outlets, concern those who answered the Survey.”

The 2018 American Wine Writer Survey follows similar surveys conducted by Wark Communications in 1994,2004 and 2010. The 2018 survey investigates writing formats, content, the status of wine writers, writers’ personal views on various issues such as gender discrimination and climate change as well as details on demographics.
